Sadly math is a gatekeeper for far too many of our students. STEM learning Lab believes that math should not be a privileged subject that is accessible to only certain segments of the population. We believe that all students can, and should, be mathematically literate in today’s digital world and we are on a mission to make this a reality.

At STEM Learning Lab, we approach teaching math through a unique, research-based pedagogy based on cultivating students’ visual spatial skills to develop conceptual understanding and increase math performance and efficiency. We understand that strong spatial skills are critical for success in mathematics, science and engineering (Uttal, Meadow, Tipton, Hand, Alden, Warren & Newcombe, 2013). We know that spatial skills are a strong predictor of achievement and attainment in STEM fields (Kell, Lubinski & Benbow, 2013). Teaching math spatially can be especially powerful especially for student that struggle as they leverage their innate spatial temporal abilities to make sense of mathematical concepts.

Through our Math Artist in Residence program, schools and students will work with a mathematics learning scientists to strengthen students mathematical skills including visual spatial skills and problem solving through a number of different techniques, including innovation spatial temporal software, game theory, engineering and design thinking.
